Is there a designer lurking inside you? Or someone close to you? If, so, listen up! it’s never too late (or too early) to learn. I have taught for many years in the Design Department of Blackrock Further Education Institute (formerly Senior College Dún Laoghaire, SCD) on a variety of design subjects. Over the years the courses have evolved to suit the changing needs and interests of our students. Now, the economy is looking up. Construction is beginning to move again and with it there is a range of new opportunities in design-related courses. Design is a multifaceted discipline with a vast array of prospects not just for employment but also for setting up your own business.
In September 2014, after many years of planning and some hiccups along the way, the college will finally be moving to its new home in Main Street, Blackrock village, Co.Dublin. Construction is nearing completion of an exciting, state-of-the-art building designed by McCullough Mulvin Architects and the college will then become known as Blackrock Further Education Institute (BFEI).
This hugely exciting project will incorporate the Town Hall, Carnegie Library and the college in a collection of refurbished historic buildings together with a new modern extension. The new spaces of a courtyard and glazed atrium will create light wells which make a focus of new social spaces for college students.
As one of Ireland’s largest Further Education Colleges, with over 800 full time students, BFEI / SCD offers a multitude of courses offering professional qualifications certified and accredited by nationally and internationally recognised examining and professional bodies.
In case you don’t know about it:
There are no tuition fees!
It is outside the CAO points system, offering level 5 and 6 courses with progression links to degree courses in many areas. Applications are made directly to the college.
